Nokia 6600, 6600i and 3600 iSync Plugins

Posted: November 5th, 2008 | Tags: , , , |

Here is area few iSync plugins I have written for Nokia Phones:

To install:

  1. Unzip to your desktop
  2. Open up finder and go to your Home Folder -> Library
  3. If the folder PhonePlugins (no space) doesn’t exist, create it
  4. Copy Nokia-6600-Slide.phoneplugin to the PhonePlugins folder
  5. Restart iSync then add a device

    Hello Paul,

at first thank you for the Plugin. I downloaded it but still did not test it.

Just a question: Is there still some experience if the plugin works with the Nokia 6600 fold, too?
I have got the 6600 slide, but I think 6600 fold and slide use a very similar software. Perhaps someone could try, find out and leav a comment here.

  2. 2 Paul said at 1:15 pm on November 6th, 2008:

    Hi Frank,

I doubt it will work as they have a slightly different identification string. I can try and produce one, however I have no way of testing it, would you be willing to test it?

    Paul

  3. 3 Frank said at 8:23 pm on November 6th, 2008:

    Hi Paul!

At first: THANK YOU! A Very good piece of work! Much better than my poor attempts of programming… ;-)

It was just an idea to help people who use an Nokia 6600 fold and need a plug-in too. I am afraid you are right and the identification strings will be definitively different. And, I agree with you, it will cause problems with the shake-hands between iSync (Mac) and phone.

But I can only say that it was enough just to change two or three strings in a certain MetaClasses.plist file to create my crude “6600 slide support” which works not perfectly but for the simple method quite well!

Just let me mention: Nokia 3600 sild seems to be quite similar to Nokia 6600 slide, too. But do not start to write any programme for this phone, if there is anybody else who asks for these programmes.

A big thanks for this plug-in, not sure if this is a glitch or a problem with settings with my mac but when syncing timed events in ical it ends up one hour earlier on the phone??? Any help with this.
    Thanks

  5. 5 Paul said at 10:16 am on November 7th, 2008:

Hi Rob, I’m not sure why this is - maybe check you have the same timezone on your phone and Mac? Mine is GMT on both.

hello and thx for the attempt… still, it’s not working on my Mac 10.5.5 / localization
I installed both in home - library - PhonePlugins and root- - library - PhonePlugins… still not working, any clue on what to do ? thx anyway.

    Thanks for th plugin

I just tested it and it works great…

just one advice : beware if you have contacts stored on your SIM : they will be doubled on your cell phone and not on your Mac adress book. You may have some data cleaning to do, but this is to be expected when you merge two sets of data !
(I wish it wern’t such a mess in my contacts, but definitely this plugin will make my life easier)

Thanks a lot for the PlugIn. It works perfect.
I am a german man and use it on an german os x. Just my Events in my Calendar has all the wrong timestamp. Every beginning time is one hour to early. Maybe of course you wrote the plugin for britians? Is it posible to change the settings? If Yes, where can I change it myself?
    Thanks a lot.

  10. 10 Frank said at 7:58 pm on November 12th, 2008:

I am German, too. And I have no problems with any timed events in my calenders. I use Mac OS 10.4.11 with iSync 2.4 and iCal 2.0.5.

Could the problem be caused by a certain feature of 10.5 (Leopard)?

    Hi Paul,
I have a 6600 fold and as expected your plugin doesn’t work with this phone. If someone was able to describe what I needed to do and how to find the phone’s information, I would be happy to attempt to modify your plugin to create the 6600 fold plugin. Please let me know as I am keen to sync my phone and my Mac.

    Hi Frank,

maybe it is caused of my System. I use Leopard. But I don’t know wich problem it could be. Is there ANYBODY who could help me?

    Thanks a lot.

  14. 14 Frank said at 4:10 pm on November 15th, 2008:

    Hi Martin,
I remember other iSync-Plugins (for other Nokia cellphones) with a similar or even the same problem. But: I do not remeber the solution. Perhaps different timezone in telephone and computer or the version of Mac OS?
At the top, Rob reports such a problem, too.

I could imagine, there is a problem because of daylight saving. I do not know the possible settings of my phone and the current settings of my Mac. Did you still compare Mac’s and Nokia’s timezone and dayligth saving settings?

  17. 17 Gilles ETOUBLEAU said at 6:58 pm on November 20th, 2008:

    Hello,

I have problems with this plugin :
1/it does not sync around 50 contacts (on 223) from the mac, different ones each time I sync - i have the alert from the mac while the phone says everything is fine.
2/ it adds the notes on the calendar without removing former ones, so I have 4 times the same note after 4 sync.

Do you have a solution ?
Thanks anyway for the job done !

    how can I fix this?

  31. 31 Mark said at 2:00 am on December 20th, 2008:

I had to connect to the phone via the bluetooth drop-down menu (upper right corner of the mac dashboard). Then select mobile phone. once I connected via that menu the isync recognized the phone. Try that.

To Vic: Be sure the the file ist in right folder:

You can not place the “6600-Fold”-Folder from the unziped File dircect to Root/Library/Phoneplugins. Be sure you choos “Nokia-6600-Fold-phoneplugin”-Folder.

Hi, Thanks for the 6600 slide plugin. It worked great on the first sync of Addressbook.

I had a problem though : when I unzipped the download, it appeared as a standart folder, without the particular “lego” plugin icon. And it was not recognized by Isync.

So, after putting the folder into the root/library/phoneplugins, what I did was :
?-I (get information) on the folder
    then also
?-I (get information) on any of the other phone plugins.
so I had both information windows open.
Then, from the preview area of the old plugin, I dragged the lego icon onto the same field in the new plugin.
The result was that the icon changed and the old plugin was inside the new one. In the finder I dragged the old one out of the new folder, back in its normal place, and that was it. I worked.

It works. Thanks. It is essential that you delete ALL phone plugins, wherever they are on your mac. I deleted from just my phone plugins folder and it didn’t work, so I also deleted every phone plugin I had on my mac including my downloads folder and a few stray files. I then started again with just the 6600 fold plugin and it worked first time.

I’ve been trying to get the 6600 fold syncing for months. I love the phone and had resorted to syncing on an old PC!!!

I can now dump it. thank God.

I’m not sure about the solution, but I had the problem with some models of SonyEricsson phones as well so this is totally a Mac matter and either a problem of this plugin.
I’m just so annoyed that this problem isn’t solved thoughout the net.

I checked both the time zone at the Mac and my phone. Both are identical. Then I ended up to changed my phone’s time zone one hour later (GMT+2) which made my calendar entries correct. Unfortunately received SMS aren’t shown with the correct time then.

So, I’ve got no clue what to do. I would really appreciated to get the problem solved.

Here’s a solution to the problem where calendar entries show up 1 hour early on the phone (for people living in GMT+1 +DST, e.g. Denmark):

    1) Go to Library/PhonePlugins
    2) “Show Package Contents” on Nokia-6600-Fold.phoneplugin
    3) Go to Contents/Resources
    4) Open MetaClasses.plist (with Property List Editor)
    5) Navigate to family.com.nokia.6600fold/Services/Item7/ServiceProperties
    6) Untick hasTimeZone
    7) Save
    8) Restart iSync

“Unable to synchronize your device. You need to turn on synchronization for your device and select the contacts and calendars you want to synchronize”

I am assuming this means getting access to the drop down menu and choosing which calendars etc and when to notify me of changes etc?

    Hi FP
    a) be sure to have the plugin in the right folder. Best is put it in the username/library/Phones and the username/library/PhonePlugins folder.

    b) Connect via bluetooth (Turn on the bluetooth option on your Nokia 3600

    c) open iSync and add the N3600

    d) Choose the options what you want to sync (Contacts, Calendars …) I only synced the contacts.

    d) sync (Sometimes it helps to erase the contacts on your N3600 before your first sync)

    Shoud work

    Hi,
Like many others I had a few problems with syncing the company and also the notes. I managed to resolve it by tinkering around. Not sure if this is the best way of doing it or not but for future reference, this is what I did.

Backup the file Nokia-6600i-Slide.phoneplugin and also the Address book data beforehand just in case.

    Right click on Nokia-6600i-Slide.phoneplugin
    and select Show Package Contents
In the new Finder window that opens open the Contents folder and then the Resources folder.

Open the file MetaClasses.plist in TextEdit
Search for “needsCompanyNameInFirstName”. The line below this reads:
Change this to and save and close the file.

Open the file PhoneConduit.plist in TextEdit
    Search for “com.apple.contacts.Contact”
Add new “notes” section below this so that the text now reads….

    company name

    maxLength
    500

    first name

    maxLength
    500

    last name

    maxLength
    500

    notes

    charsToStrip
    \
    maxLength
    126

    Save and close the file.

Open the file SyncEngine.plist in TextEdit
    Search for the text “com.apple.contacts.Contact”.
Add a line containing “notes” so that this section now reads:
    com.apple.contacts.Contact

    com.apple.syncservices.RecordEntityName
    last name
    company name
    first name
    notes
    email addresses
    phone numbers
    URLs
    street addresses

    Save and close the file.

Close the finder window that shows the contents of Nokia-6600i-Slide.phoneplugin
Use this file to install as per Paul Bain’s instructions. I restarted the Mac after this (not sure if this is necessary).

I had to remove all my contacts on my phone and sync again so that all the new contacts were re-inserted otherwise you may get parsing errors.

For some reason updates to the notes would not sync without removing the contact and re-inserting them but that’s a minor bug.
